Image Fomats
When words aren't enough and you want to express your ideas visually, or just want something that looks cool … insert some images. The two main formats for you to choose your images are a GIF (.gif) file or a JPEG (.jpg) file. These are the most widely supported file formats. Here is a table to demonstrate the differences between the GIF and JPEG files and when it is best for you to use either.

256 Colors
Virtually unlimited colors
Can have transparent areas
Can be animated
Best used for graphics such as clipart, buttons, banners.
Best used for high definition graphics such as photos and complex images.

Another format for images is the PNG (.png) file. The advantages for using a PNG over a GIF are that you are not limited to 256 colors, and it handles transparencies better. The PNG format is favored by the W3C, although the web-community has not widely used for the simple fact that it is not supported by all web browsers.
